  • Strong, transparent and accountable governance ensures the health of the AFEC organisation and development opportunities for our people. The AFEC business is structured to focus on our customers’ businesses across three key boards – consultancy, construction and investment. All of the directors at AFEC maintain significant client involvement and are renowned for their hands-on approach to customer service, employee engagement and delivery. This section provides an introduction to our group board of directors and the strategic and operational boards of the AFEC business.

John S Gunning
Chairman

,John Graduated from University College Dublin with a degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Following his post-graduate training in the UK he was employed by the ESB where he held positions of shift engineer, training manager, and project engineer with ESBI. In 1986 he was assigned to a position as Chief Technical Advisor for the United Nations Development Programme in Vietnam on a major Power plant rehabilitation and training project. John was responsible for training and supervision of over one hundred Managers, Engineers and technicians under a contract with the ESB. This was the beginning of a lasting business and friendship bond between Ireland and Vietnam and between their respective power companies. The more recent Power projects John has been integral in delivering include a 1200MW coal fired plant in Haiphong and a 400 MW Combined cycle Gas turbine project in the south, near Ho Chi Minh city. John joined AFEC International in 2007 and has been an integral and driving force in our expansion and development in the Power and Utilities Sector.

Michael Ahearne
Chief Executive Officer

,,Michael qualified from University College Cork with a Honors Degree in Engineering in 1972. Michael Ahearne is the Chief Executive Officer of AFEC International and has over 30 years experience in the construction sector. Michael served as Chief Fire Officer in counties Tipperary South and Carlow and was a key member of the government task force for the building regulations reform. Michael established Michael Ahearne & Assts in 1988 and later formed AFEC specializing in fire safety and Engineering.

Michael Mc Garry
Chief Financial Officer

,,Michael Mc Garry was appointed as AFEC International’s Chief Financial Officer at the end of 2014. Michael qualified as Accountant and joined Kentz Corporation in 1977 as a Financial Accountant. In 1987 he became Financial Director of the Company. He resigned from the group in 1997 to pursue his own business interests through the Europlan Group which he co-founded in 1989.Michael has had over 33 years experience of Senior Management in the Engineering and Construction Business throughout the world. He was as senior member of the Kentz Management a driving force in its growth from a turnover of IR£3.5m in 1976 to IR£320m on his retirement in 1997. He was actively involved in the securing and execution Kentz’s largest projects internationally and brings a wealth of experience to AFEC Internationals continued growth.

David Ahearne
International Development Director

,,,David Ahearne qualified from University College Dublin with a degree in Architecture and later completed a Bachelor of Engineering at Trinity Collage Dublin. David has a broad ranging portfolio of projects varying in scale from town master planning and high rise mixed use projects, to small scale high value boutique hotels. He started his carer in Ireland and has since successfully delivered projects in over 12 countries throughout Asia, the Middle East and Europe. David has particular experience in understanding the project ambitions and strategically working with clients to ensure the most beneficial brief for the design team is realised at the outset. David closely monitors our International project portfolio and works closely with our clients and design team. David’s experience before joining AFEC International includes Business Development Manager with HKR Architects in Abu Dhabi and London.

Billy Moore
Infrastructure and Planning

,,Billy has worked as Senior Management Planning Expert and for Ramboll DK and Chairman of IOWA. Before going in to private practice, Billy served as Senior Environmental Engineer in Tipperary South and County Engineer in Monaghan.Billy has excellent technical and business qualifications, including a first class Engineering degree, an honours masters degree in Environmental Protection and an MBA degree from the prestigious Smurfit Business School in University College Dublin. He is an experienced project co-ordinator/ manager who has been involved for 26 years in the planning, design, procurement and management of major infrastructure projects. He is familiar with local government practices funding sources and financial management procedures. He has prepared successful applications for EU Regional and Cohesion Funds. He has experience of Phare, EBRD, EIB, World Bank and EU procedures. He has highly developed computer skills and has consulting experience in a number of Central European and FSU states.

Giuseppe Colosimo
International Design Director

,,,Giuseppe Colosimo is a published Architect with an intrinsic understanding of design and all its subtleties, gained in the past 15 years working for leading practices in the USA, Europe, and the Middle East in the Architecture, Design and Planning industry. He has won several design competitions in the USA, Middle East and China, and has designed a number of high profile projects during his career. His designs are not egotistical sculptures but instead about the experience of the user and aim to create environments that harmoniously coexist within their surroundings while substantially improving the quality of existing public and private spaces. He has been responsible for the design on a wide variety of projects worldwide, including the Middle East, Europe, Africa, China and the Americas.

Nigel Neely
Head of Architecture

,,,Nigel qualified from the University of Leeds with a degree in Architecture and has practiced in the UK, Africa and the Middle East for over 20 years. Nigel was previously a Director of OBK Architects in Dublin. Nigel has a wide range of experience across the built environment and has acted as lead design consultant on many of our major projects throughout Ireland and the UK.
